What kind of books do you usually gravitate towards reading? Fiction novels, poetry, or maybe business books? Lately I've been reading a ton of business books because as I progress on my entrepreneurial journey, there is always something new to learn. My latest (and highly recommended) are The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg and the 80/20 Principle and 92 Other Powerful Laws of Nature by Richard Koch. Although these are incredibly stimulating and motivating - what usually happens is that I just want to apply everything that I learn immediately! The problem with that? My brain is constantly working on improvement. Although this is absolutely fantastic - it has become increasingly hard to free my mind and let go when it’s time to actually relax.
The golden lesson here is about finding balance.
I remember a time when I used to read just for fun - simply for the pleasure of relaxing and enjoying a good story. This allowed me to let go of whatever else was on my mind and immerse myself in the story - allowing me to release whatever thoughts I was holding onto. When you’re an entrepreneur - you know there’s a LOT of thoughts constantly going through your mind and it seems there's always something that needs to be done, however:
It's also important to know when to let go of that need to control and just be.
My suggestion, and something I’m trying out, is to balance reading business books with ones that you enjoy purely for the pleasure of reading. This week I’m reading a wonderfully seductive novel called The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera while also reading The Power of Habit. This balance between educational reading and enjoyment has increased my mental sharpness and really helped me relax and unwind bringing me much needed balance.
I challenge you to try this out yourself - this week pick one informational book that will help you grow in your business or improve on yourself and one that you'll read just for fun. I'd love to hear from you - what books are you reading and finding inspiring? Leave a comment below!
